Makalu Base Camp Trek

Overview

The Makalu Base Camp Trek takes you to the foot of Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth highest mountain in the world, in one of the most remote and unspoiled corners of Nepal. It runs through Makalu Barun National Park in the east, where steep valleys, dense forest, and high alpine lakes lie below some of the biggest mountains in the Himalayas. Far fewer trekkers come here than to Everest or Annapurna, so the trails stay quiet and the villages keep their traditional way of life.

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, followed by a drive to Num and Simma. From there you walk through villages and forest to Ekuwa and Kalapatal, then climb through Deurali and Dhap to the Baule Pass and the lake at Baule Pokhari. On clear days you can see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga from here. The trail continues over the Jaljala Pass to Dobate and then follows the Barun Valley up through Yangle Kharka and Langmale to Makalu Base Camp.

An early morning walk from Base Camp to a high viewpoint gives a close look at Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest. You then retrace your steps to Dobate and return via Khongma, Seduwa, and Num, before driving to Tumlingtar and flying back to Kathmandu.

This is a demanding trek that suits fit, experienced trekkers who are comfortable with long days, remote trails, and camping in the wilderness. It is a good choice if you want a Himalayan base camp trek away from the crowds.
